Kapity pt 2

The first day of the clinic we spent the morning sorting and getting the pharmacy organized, dividing the church into waiting rooms and doctor/patient rooms with sheets, and doing a lot of crowd control.  We had two medical students from Port au Prince come and join us, Wislyn & Makenzi.  Their story is a miracle in itself but on their way to the mountain Tuesday morning their bus broke down and they sat on the side of the road for hours.  Because they were so late Frantzy went ahead and started seeing patients.  It was so sweet seeing him do what he is so passionate about!  He was making little kids laugh, comforting people in pain and any time he spoke in front of the crowd in the waiting room everyone had a ton of respect for everything he was saying.
Our waiting room was inside of the half built school and a Samaritan's Purse tarp draped over the top for shade :)

As people filled out their charts and their complaints were charted they were moved into the church to wait for the doctor.  The first day we saw 150 people.  The other two doctors arrived around 2:00 and jumped right into their makeshift rooms and started seeing patients!
Frantzy, Wislyn, & Makenzi.  The hearts that these three men have are so sweet.  It was a blast spending so much time with them!  We started seeing patients at 7am on day two.  They starting arriving at the break of daylight.  We planned on seeing 100 more patients and then calling it a day.
The guys went strong for hours.  I was working in the pharmacy and it seemed like it was nonstop filling prescriptions.  A few hours into it I went in and checked on Frantzy.  He had a number written on one of his charts that said 271.  I asked if that's how many patients we'd seen combined and asked if we'd be packing up soon.  He chuckled and said that was only that day!  271 people in one day?!  I ran back to the pharmacy and was baffled that we still had a ton of medication.

This was our pharmacy.  Thanks to the incredible support of my family for gathering and sorting medical donations in the States, Stan Curtis for shipping it all in, and Mich Michl for donating to cover the meds that we were missing!  ps: this picture was taken half way through day two.  there was much more! :)

Frantzy and I decided that instead of buying meds in the States and trying to ship them in that we'd go and price meds from the laboratory in Port au Prince.  We got great deals on many vitamins and antibiotics.  It's so encouraging to know that we even have a laboratory here and buying this medicine is an option!

At 515 people we called it a day. We were out of every kind of medicine we had.  We unfortunately had to turn away about 20 people at the end.  As they left they each received a worm pill and a vitamin.  They were all so gracious and we promised that if the Lord opened the door we'd absolutely be back!  We saw so many different cases.  Many were infections, fevers, worms, wounds that hadn't ever been cared for, acid reflux, cataracts in the eye, etc.  All of the cases were heartbreaking but there was one that was especially hard.

This beauty is 18  years old.  You couldn't ever tell by her smile and beautiful face, but she's extremely sick.  Actually, so sick that I was so overwhelmed with her condition I never got to even ask her name. I have pictures that would better explain her condition, but I can't even look at them without crying.  I'm going to do my best to explain her condition and I'll let you imagine the rest.  This sweet girls skin is literally shrinking around her entire body, her bones are sticking out in many different areas and she has extremely hard masses all over her torso that are close to the size of a cantaloupe.  I've literally never seen anything like this.  The doctors had never seen anything like her condition either.  She has 8 other siblings who have died, her parents only have 2 children left.  Everyone who knows her family and who saw it said it's a voodoo curse.  Now, I don't understand voodoo, I don't understand what power it has, all I know is that the God who I serve is much greater than anything Satan can ever do.  I didn't share her story to freak anyone out, but just ask for prayer.  Whether this is an all physical condition or a spiritual situation she can always use prayer.  Frantzy and I have committed to providing any medication or medical care necessary to keep her out of pain and try to find a cure for her condition.  She had the sweetest spirit and I got to talk with her about different things while the doctors were treating her wounds.  She said she fell one day about 5 years ago and all of these things started happening.  If there is anyone in the medical field out there who might have a clue, please don't hesitate to email me!

Our last evening on the mountain we were able to pass out some items we brought up.  Close to 400 people received a t-shirt, many received Shoe Sensations flip flops, World Food Relief soup, and pillowcase dresses.  We de-wormed close to 600 people, passed out medication to over 500, gave out close to 1,000 John and Romans booklets put together by Seedline International and were able to encourage many people, from witch doctors to pastors.  God is good and we are so blessed to be a part of His plan to further His Kingdom in Kapity, Haiti.

Thank you Ila Reeves & Debbie Buchanan for the dresses! :)

The trip back down the mountain was much less eventful.  Somehow we got ahold of a Haitian government truck and they came and picked us up.  It was a blessing and our team are all safely home recovering from exhaustion and colds.  Please continue to pray for our friends on the mountain.  Their everyday lives are incredibly hard - no safe drinking water to be found, deforestation has made it nearly impossible to grow any kind of fruit and a lack of civilization and convenience has kept the community from having any kind of economy at all.  Thanks again for all of the prayers and support.  We are BLESSED! This won't be the end of our Kapity adventures! :)
